APM Terminals Apapa has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development and community empowerment by investing approximately N400 million in various corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives across healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability sectors.

The announcement was made during the second edition of the APM Terminals Apapa Scholarship Awards, held in Apapa, Lagos, where 51 students from host communities were presented with scholarships aimed at supporting their academic pursuits and personal development.

In a statement during the event, Mr. Frederik Klinke, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, emphasized that corporate success is not solely measured by financial performance, but also by the positive impact a company has on society. He said, “While our core operations focus on facilitating import and export activities at Apapa Terminal, we believe it is equally important to invest in the growth and development of Nigeria’s future — our youth. So far, APM Terminals Apapa has invested about N400 million in various initiatives that cover healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. These efforts reflect our commitment to giving back to the communities that host our operations.”

Klinke urged the scholarship recipients to make the most of the opportunity, stressing that education is the surest path to self-reliance, personal growth, and national development.

Mr. Steen Knudsen, Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, highlighted that the scholarship programme extends beyond financial support. Some beneficiaries would also have the opportunity to undergo internships at the terminal, gaining valuable practical experience to complement their academic studies. He said, “We will continue to support you as long as you maintain good academic performance. It would be exciting to see some of you join APM Terminals in the near future, adding value to both our operations and society at large.”

Benedict Nwangwu, Employee Relations Manager, explained that the current awards represent the second batch of the scholarship programme. Over 100 applicants were screened before the final beneficiaries were selected. In addition, five employees of APM Terminals also received scholarships, reflecting the company’s commitment to continuous learning and staff development. Nwangwu noted, “Currently, APM Terminals Apapa has over 100 students benefiting from our scholarship schemes across various public institutions in Nigeria. This demonstrates our sustained dedication to youth empowerment through education and skill acquisition.”

Representing the Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Vice Chairman Ismael Ganiyu, praised APM Terminals for its “significant investment in the future of the youth of Apapa.” He urged beneficiaries to make their communities proud through academic excellence and encouraged other corporate organizations in the area to emulate APM Terminals’ model of community engagement.

Several beneficiaries and their parents expressed heartfelt gratitude to APM Terminals for the initiative. Muhammed Olamilekan, a 400-level student at the University of Ilorin, said, “Thank you, APM Terminals, for helping me move a step closer to achieving my dream. I promise to make the most of this scholarship.” Ojora Muslimot, a final-year Economics student at the University of Lagos, said the scholarship had significantly eased the financial burden on her family, allowing her to focus more on her studies.

APM Terminals is a global container terminal operator and a subsidiary of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. Over the years, the company’s facilities in Nigeria have undergone major upgrades and expansions to improve efficiency, capacity, and productivity, establishing APM Terminals as a key player in the nation’s maritime industry.

This latest initiative underscores the company’s philosophy that sustainable business growth is intertwined with meaningful social contributions, particularly in the areas of youth development, education, and community welfare.
