Global payments giant PayPal has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet directly into ChatGPT, in a move expected to reshape how consumers shop and pay within AI-driven environments.

The agreement, finalized over the weekend and confirmed exclusively to CNBC, will enable users to complete purchases seamlessly inside ChatGPT using PayPal’s secure checkout system. The rollout is scheduled to begin next year and will also open the door for merchants to sell their products through the popular AI platform.

PayPal’s Chief Executive Officer, Alex Chriss, described the partnership as a pivotal step in the evolution of digital commerce, combining the company’s trusted payment infrastructure with OpenAI’s rapidly expanding user base.

“We have hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who will soon be able to click the ‘Buy with PayPal’ button inside ChatGPT and enjoy a safe, convenient, and secure checkout experience,” Chriss told CNBC.

The collaboration builds upon OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature, launched last month, which allows users in the United States to search for and purchase products directly within ChatGPT. The feature currently supports Etsy listings and will soon expand to include merchants on Shopify.

At the heart of the new e-commerce model is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open-source standard developed by OpenAI in partnership with payment processor Stripe. The system handles every stage of the transaction from product discovery and selection to payment confirmation and shipping entirely within ChatGPT, while merchants remain responsible for fulfillment and customer support.

Under the terms of the partnership, PayPal will oversee merchant onboarding, payment routing, transaction verification, and fraud prevention. The company said it will leverage its extensive network of verified merchants and consumers to enhance safety and trust across transactions.

Chriss emphasized that the initiative unites “the largest verified merchant ecosystem in the world” with “one of the most trusted consumer payment platforms,” offering end-to-end reliability for both buyers and sellers.

Users will be able to make payments using linked bank accounts, credit or debit cards, or PayPal balances. Additional services including buyer protection, real-time package tracking, and dispute resolution will also be available within the ChatGPT interface.

The alliance underscores PayPal’s broader embrace of artificial intelligence. The fintech leader has already begun deploying OpenAI’s enterprise tools internally to speed up product development and improve customer experience.

With ChatGPT’s global user base exceeding 700 million weekly active users, the integration positions both companies at the forefront of AI-powered e-commerce innovation. The partnership effectively transforms ChatGPT into a personal shopping assistant capable of recommending products, processing payments, and completing purchases in one seamless interaction.

Analysts say the collaboration marks a significant convergence of fintech and artificial intelligence one that could redefine online retail by blending conversational AI with trusted financial infrastructure.

By joining forces, PayPal and OpenAI aim to pioneer the next frontier of digital commerce one that is smarter, faster, and more secure for consumers and businesses alike.
