Lafarge Africa Plc has introduced EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, as part of its drive to promote sustainable building practices and reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry.In a statement, the building solutions company said EcoCrete achieves at least a 20 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional CEM I concrete, without compromising strength, performance, or reliability.Lafarge Africa’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, described the launch as a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability agenda. “The introduction of EcoCrete expands our portfolio of sustainable solutions and reinforces our commitment to decarbonizing Nigeria’s construction sector. It is another bold step in our mission to help builders and customers make smart choices while supporting Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy,” he said.
According to Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Readymix at Lafarge Africa, EcoCrete is designed for versatility and delivers superior performance across multiple applications. “EcoCrete provides consistent quality and durability while significantly cutting carbon emissions. It is suitable for residential housing, commercial buildings, roads, and major infrastructure projects,” he noted.The company explained that the new product builds on the success of EcoPlanet Unicem and EcoPlanet Elephant cement, both launched in 2024 and 2025, respectively, as part of its broader push for sustainable construction alternatives.
Speaking on the innovation, Emmanuel Ilaboya, Head of Innovation and New Product Development at Lafarge Africa, described EcoCrete as a climate-smart solution tailored to address Nigeria’s environmental challenges. “EcoCrete is more than just a product; it is a practical response to the urgent call for sustainable construction and a critical tool in the fight against climate change,” Ilaboya said.With EcoCrete, Lafarge Africa continues to consolidate its leadership in Nigeria’s construction sector by providing innovative, low-carbon solutions aligned with Holcim’s global vision of “building progress for people and planet.”
