Nigerian telecoms operator 9mobile has unveiled a new identity as T2, signalling a renewed push to reclaim market share, broaden its reach, and compete more strongly in the nation’s fast-expanding digital economy.
The rebrand marks the “Transformation” stage of the company’s four-phase recovery plan—Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth rolled out after Lighthouse Telecoms, led by businessman and investor Thomas Etuh, acquired 9mobile in 2023.
Since the acquisition, the operator has reshaped its leadership, reconstituted its board, and, in July, signed a landmark three-year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria. The deal the first of its scale in the industry allows T2 subscribers to roam seamlessly on MTN’s nationwide network, improving coverage, capacity, and service quality in areas where the company’s own infrastructure had been limited.
At the brand unveiling in Lagos on Friday, Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe described the change as “a total evolution of who we are, why we exist, and how we deliver value,” stressing it was far more than a cosmetic overhaul.
“T2 is a symbol of our renewed commitment to innovation, resilience, and a deepened focus on customer experience,” he said.
Etuh called the transition a “rebirth” after years of legal and operational challenges, citing “faith and love for country” as his motivation for acquiring the business. He thanked the Nigerian Communications Commission and the company’s customers for their patience during a period marked by multiple litigations and operational setbacks.
“We are rising together again. Together, with you, we are reclaiming all lost grounds,” he said.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani welcomed the rebrand but urged the company to ensure it translates into measurable improvements.
“Let this rebrand be more than a change of colours or a new logo,” he said. “It should reflect renewed commitment to innovation, service excellence, and the millions of Nigerians who rely on your network every single day.”
Representing Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin noted that T2’s digital innovation agenda aligns with the state’s vision for a robust and inclusive digital economy.
The T2 brand will be introduced in phases to avoid service disruption. Built on four pillars—Speed, Smart Living, Digital Lifestyle, and Trust, the company aims to position itself as a bridge between connectivity and culture, infrastructure and impact, as Nigeria’s telecoms sector enters a new decade of transformation.
