The Dangote Petrochemical Refinery is set to boost its refining capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) by December 2025, according to a new report by Argus Media. This marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s drive toward energy self-sufficiency.
The report reveals that the planned increase represents a 50,000bpd rise from its current 650,000bpd output, attributed to ongoing optimisation and phased expansion of operations at the multi-billion-dollar facility. Industry sources cited by Argus suggest the upgrade could be completed as early as December.
Confirming the development, Edwin Devakumar, Group Executive Director of Dangote Industries Limited, explained that the capacity boost follows improvements in processing efficiency since the refinery began operations earlier in 2024.
“The refinery is expanding from 650,000 to 700,000 barrels per day, and we expect to complete this by the end of 2025,” Devakumar told Argus during an interview. He added that the refinery has already surpassed 100 per cent output levels in several departments, prompting a de-bottlenecking process to maximise production.
Data from Kpler shows that crude receipts at the refinery reached 644,000bpd in July, exceeding the previous monthly record of 445,000bpd set in June. Sales of gasoline from the facility officially commenced in September.
Devakumar also revealed that the refinery had exceeded nameplate capacity in several key processing units, including: 120% in the mild hydrocracker, 125% in the RFCC gasoline desulphurisation unit,106% in the continuous catalytic regeneration unit, 140% in the Penex process, 143% in the naphtha hydrotreater
To support increased gasoline output, the refinery has been purchasing additional naphtha, he noted. These enhancements are expected to further strengthen domestic fuel supply and expand Nigeria’s export footprint.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, disclosed that the refinery exported approximately 1.35 billion litres of petrol—equivalent to 1 million tonnes—between June and July 2025 alone. The exported volumes, delivered over the past 50 days, highlight the facility’s growing role in the global fuel market.
