Airtel Nigeria has secured three major telecommunications licences from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), signaling its readiness to expand infrastructure and compete more aggressively in Nigeria’s fast-growing data market.

The licences—awarded to Airtel Nigeria Telesonic Limited, a subsidiary of Airtel Africa—include the National Long Distance, Internet Service Provider, and Sales & Installation Major licences.

According to details released by the NCC, these new authorisations will enable Airtel to scale up its fibre optic network and deliver enhanced data and internet services to customers nationwide. The move aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital economy and inclusivity objectives.

The National Long Distance licence, valid for 20 years, allows Airtel Nigeria Telesonic to build and manage networks supporting long-distance voice, data, and video services within the country. It became effective on July 1, 2024, and will run until June 30, 2044.

The Internet Service Provider and Sales & Installation Major licences are each valid for five years, also beginning on July 1, 2024, and expiring on June 30, 2029. These will facilitate the company’s expansion efforts in servicing a growing number of Nigerian users demanding faster, more reliable connectivity.

The NCC confirmed that Airtel has fully paid all associated fees and has been issued the necessary documents as required by regulation.

This development is expected to spur competition within the telecoms sector and raise service quality across the board as major operators reposition themselves in the evolving digital landscape.
