Britain’s economic output showed better-than-expected growth in May, according to official data released on Thursday, providing an early boost to the newly-elected Labour government.
The Office for National Statistics reported that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 0.4% in May, contrasting with flat GDP growth in April.

Analysts had anticipated a growth rate of 0.2% for May.

Responding to the data, Britain’s new finance minister Rachel Reeves stated, “Delivering economic growth is our national mission, and we don’t have a minute to waste.”
She added, “A decade of national renewal has begun, and we are just getting started,” highlighting her role as the country’s first female chancellor of the exchequer under Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
